Assignments by date

Today you will consider three options for our next unit of study. Follow each of the links posted below - at the end of class you will vote on your first, second, and third choices.

Option One: Finding a book you WANT to read

If you hate to read, it might be because you have too often been stuck with a book that is too hard, too long, or just too boring for your personal tastes. But with over one hundred thousand books published every year, there are books that are right for you - really! If you love to read, you need no convincing, but perhaps you’d like to know more about how to find the best books for you -after all, there are so many books and so little time!

No matter where you’re coming from, this unit will give you the opportunity to

- accurately identify your own reading level using the STAR Reading Assessment

- strategically locate books that are appealing to you at sites like Reading Rants

- use the free services of the DeKalb County Public Library

- spend time in school and at home reading what YOU choose to read

- share your reading in a way that’s right for you

Option Two: Othello by Shakespeare and others

Love. Jealousy. Lust. Lies. This story has it all, and William Shakespeare is just one of the authors who thought so. In this unit, we will

- research the sources of inspiration for Shakespeare’s tragic play

- read and listen to the original script

- read a modern retelling with some interesting twists

- view a movie adaptation and consider what the critics had to say about it

Option Three: Collecting Family Stories

Here’s your chance to do some writing that will make a real difference! Interview a relative and save a memory forever. In this unit, you will

- Listen to gifted storytellers online and on CDs

- Learn how to conduct a family interview

- Write a personal narrative based on your interview

- Create an online multimedia story to share with your family and friends

Remember to register your vote HERE. (One vote per person) With any time you have left today, try out the word game sites below just for fun!
